American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus)

To the best of our knowledge, all crocodiles at Turneffe Atoll are American Crocodiles (crocodylus acutus). Although they were heavily hunted for their hides and meat at one time, they are now protected and Turneffe Atoll is thought to have one of the largest populations of this species in the Caribbean.

Considerable crocodylus acutus research has been done at Turneffe, primarily by Steven Platt and Thomas Rainwater through The Oceanic Society.
