Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve

The Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve (TAMR) is critical to the effective managment long-term protection of Turneffe Atoll.   Between 2010 and 2012, Turneffe Atoll Trust (TAT) led the efforts in Belize to establish the the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve.

TAT initially formed the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Council to organize all parties interested in protection of Turneffe Atoll.  This led to permission to proceed in developing a Managment Plan for the reserve which was overseen and funded by TAT through a grant from the Oak Foundation.

A lenghty consultative process with stakeholders and the general public ensued and on November 22, 2012 The Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve was officially established as Belize’s largest and most diverse Marine Reserve. Trust Atoll Trust was subsequently the driving force in establishing a top-quality, stakeholder-based organization to operate this  Reserve, the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA).

The Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association is a Belizean non-profit organization whose Board of Directors is made up of 2 commercial fishing leaders, 2 tourism representatives, 2 persons of international or national conservation expertise, a TAT representative, and a Turneffe property owner.
