An Economic Analysis of Sport Fishing in Belize


Sport fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon is essential to Belize’s economy, producing an annual economic impact of roughly $60 million and creating approximately 1,800 full-time jobs. 

Through the leadership of Turneffe Atoll Trust, legislation adopting catch & release protection for these species has ensured that this economic impact will be sustained for Belize and its citizens.

The economic study below was critical in convincing decision makers in Belize of the wisdom of protecting bonefish, permit and tarpon.
